Guild of Harmony

Who are the Guild of Harmony?

The Guild of Harmony work tirelessly to ensure The Engine is free of any one group’s domination, keeping the balance between humanity and The Engine first and foremost in their work.

This is not to say the Guild of Harmony is a united front – far from it. The Guild is splintered into three Creeds, each with its own goals and desires. These Creeds often disagree as to the best course of action and it is not unheard of for two competing groups of Guilders to come to blows in attempting to keep their Creed's theory of balance in supremacy.

However, when a dire enough threat to the balance of the world is detected the entire Guild will come together as one to bring the delicate balance of power back to what they view as an acceptable level.

To this end, the Guild of Harmony is even willing to temporarily ally with competing groups who vie for control of The Engine to ensure that no one Faction can claim complete control over the Engine Nodes.

The Three Creeds

Whilst the Guild of Harmony operates toward the single goal of maintaining balance, it is divided along sectarian lines into three basic schools of thought. Each of these philosophical outlooks - known as Creeds - operates differently and will constantly work to have its theories and strategies adopted by the organisation as a whole.

The Ethicists

The Ethicists believe that The Engine, as an entity, should be kept secret and away from the prying eyes of those who seek it.

They are firm in their conviction that any influence upon The Engine by mankind is unwarranted and, whilst it should be carefully monitored it should not be interfered with or allowed to be controlled by any one group. Their overriding thesis is that only by keeping The Engine secret can it be protected.

The Pragmatists

This Creed believe The Engine to be too great a source of power to be ignored. They feel that only by learning the secrets of The Engine can they ensure it be kept safe from those that seek to control it.

This belief leads them to actively seek more knowledge of how The Engine operates and how it influences the world – the Pragmatists are of a mind that the Guild of Harmony should be the repository of all practical knowledge of The Engine.

The Anarchists

Wherever The Engine’s influence is strongest you will likely find representatives of the Anarchists. They believe The Engine is a source or power that should be utilised and only by learning to live with the chaos it engenders can mankind come to terms with the great device’s power.

Deliberately embracing the unpredictable power of the Engine often leads the Anarchists into conflict with the other Creeds who follow a more measured approach.

Guild of Harmony Operations

The Guild is controlled by the mysterious triumvirate known to all Guilders as The Quorum. Each member of the Quorum’s identity is kept a closely guarded secret, even from other members of the Quorum. They never meet in person and only ever communicate during meetings of high level Guilders known as Conclaves.

Through the directives of the Quorum, the Guild of Harmony works in secret to try and keep the various Factions vying for control of The Engine in check. It will take whatever steps it feels necessary to maintain this delicate balance, ranging from simple foiling of plans and counter espionage to outright, bloody and rather effective direct action.
