

The Scions of the Sands were never meant to exist.
What began as a sanctioned expedition — a quiet reach beyond London in search of knowledge best left buried — became something far more dangerous. In the deserts of Nubt, ambition collided with the will of The Engine, and the world answered in kind.
The sands do not forget. And they do not forgive.

The Expedition
Dispatched under royal authority, Carter’s Expedition, was assembled for discovery, not war. Scholars, explorers, hired blades, and laborers crossed continents chasing rumors of a lost Engine Node — an echo of power older than the modern world.
They found it.
Beneath the sands of Nubt lay a dormant Node, bound to ancient rites and forgotten gods. Its awakening did not bring enlightenment. It brought recognition — as if something long buried had been waiting to be called back into the world.
From that moment, the expedition ceased to be merely human.

The Nubt Node and Set
The awakening of the Nubt Node tore open more than stone and sand. It gave rise to the Avatar of Set, a manifestation of destruction and dominion shaped by belief as much as power. Those who witnessed it did not question its divinity — they submitted to it.
From the expedition’s ranks emerged the Guardians of Set, bound by faith, fear, and awe. They follow not out of loyalty, but conviction, convinced they stand at the center of a divine reckoning.
Carter believes he commands this power.
The Useful Dead
The Scions do not raise the dead, they use them.
Through the use of Canopic Jars, ancient spirits are torn from rest and bound once more to purpose. Warriors, priests, servants, and kings long reduced to dust now walk the battlefield again — their strength borrowed, their will constrained, their silence enforced.
Each jar is a bargain. Each bargain carries a cost.
The more the Scions draw upon these relics, the thinner the veil between past and present becomes — and the less certain it is who truly serves whom.

Faith, Control, and Delusion
The Nubt Node has also awakened other ancient beings of the desert, bodies long dead rising and twisting into mythical forms. Carter's knowledge of Ancient Egyptian lore combined with his powerful talent for alchemancy has allowed him some measure of control over these newly-summoned allies.
However, as is ever the way with those affected by The Engine, these unearthly creatures have been warped and their true motivations may not have been fully revealed...the Scions of the Sands exist at the intersection of belief and arrogance.
Some among them worship what they have awakened. Others seek to exploit it. A few understand that neither path ends well — but continue regardless, driven by obligation, curiosity, or the simple refusal to turn back.
They are not unified by ideology.
They are unified by consequence.

Playing the Scions of the Sands
On the tabletop, the Scions embody endurance, attrition, and inevitability. They excel at holding ground thought lost, returning fallen warriors to the fight, and forcing opponents into wars of exhaustion rather than speed.
Victory does not come swiftly. It comes when resistance finally collapses.
